As the CompTIA Federal Policy team embarks on the 2018 legislative year there will are a number of key policy issues that the technology industry will face to ensure it remains competitive. In this post we have highlighted a number of those key issues from tax policy, broadband access, privacy, cybersecurity, workforce development and new and emerging technologies.

CompTIA executive vice president of public advocacy wrote an op-ed for Morning Consult on June 19 and described how by 2024, there will be 1.8 million unfilled tech jobs, according to CompTIA. Given technology’s importance to the economy, ensuring that we can fill those jobs should be a national priority.

On Tuesday, as part of the Administration’s “tech week”, CompTIA CEO Todd Thibodeaux joined his fellow tech trade association leaders for a “listening session” at the White House on tax reform and government IT modernization. It was an intimate gathering of about 15 people in the Roosevelt Room and followed a well reported and productive meeting the day before with many of the leading global technology firm CEOs.

At the beginning of December, the CompTIA Policy Executive Board (PxB) met to review and finalize CompTIA’s 2017 policy priorities. This group is charged with ensuring all policy committees are aware of policy positions and initiatives, seek consensus for those positions, and provide guidance on the growth and direction of CompTIA advocacy activities.

During a Policy Executive Board (PxB) dinner in December, we were honored to have Congressman Will Hurd (R-TX), Ambassador Rufus Yerxa, President and CEO of the National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC), and Jeff Lambert from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) join us for a lively discussion on what the next several months may hold for tech policy and larger geopolitical considerations.
